In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Vaurien class, a memorable sailing event unfolded in Vigo, where the Italian sailor Marco Faccenda claimed his eighth world title. The Vaurien World Championship witnessed a stunning display of skill and sportsmanship, with Faccenda teaming up with a promising young sailor, Marcello Miliardi. Despite their age difference, the duo excelled, showing impeccable synergy among nearly 40 competing Spanish boats.
The event had a rocky start with a confused beginning and mixed race conditions, but Faccenda and Miliardi found their stride, dominating the scoreboard with a series of top finishes. Their performance peaked in the final race, securing Faccenda’s world champion status once again, much to the pride of the Italian contingent.
The championship featured 85 boats, including youth teams and sailors from 14 nations across three continents, showcasing the class’s global appeal and competitive spirit.
The Italian victory symbolizes the enduring ‘Spirit of Vaurien,’ where passion, inclusivity, and nautical skill come together, emphasizing the class’s legacy in Italy, which will be celebrated at the “Vaurien Wooden Experience” in Rosignano from August 19-21. The event, exclusive to historical wooden Vauriens, will feature regattas, thematic evenings, and contributions from sailing legends, promising to be a blend of culture, pride, and a testament to the Vaurien’s influence on sailing.
